Interview Q&A
How long have you been in business?
As of September 2011, 9 years. I opened the business after completing a Home Study course offered by the "Kansas City School of Watchmaking". The curriculum consisted of 48 lessons in Clock & Watch repair.
What is your primary product or service?
Repairing Clocks and Watches only.
How did you first become interested in your line of business? (if owner) - What is your background? (If owner or store manager)
Friends urging through conversations. I spent 34 years as a mechanical design engineer employed by Xerox Corp and retired in 2002.
How do you differentiate yourself from other businesses in your category and area?
I operate a full service repair shop out of a professional and extensive workshop set up in the basement of my home. I do not collect clocks or watches so that my focus is 100% on customer equipment only.
How many locations do you have and do you have plans to expand?
One location as stated above. No plans to expand which sometimes leads to longer lead times to complete customer repairs due to heavy backlog.
Provide detailed directions to your location
Drive East 2.0 miles from the intersection of Route 250 and Ayrault Road in Perinton then turn right on Sandpiper Hill. Sandpiper Hill is a Cul-de-Sac with homes on the LEFT side only. I am the 3rd DRIVEWAY (not house) on the LEFT. That's important because the shop/house at #6 Sandpiper Hill is down a steep driveway about 200 feet off the street and can't readily be seen from street level.
What type of payments do you accept?
Cash or check only.
Which areas do you service?
Monroe County and surrounding areas, as far West as Brockport, South to Dansville/Arkport, East to Sodus/Lyons and of course North to the Lake.
Who owns your company or runs daily operations?
Owner and sole proprietor is James Myers.
What are your hours of operation?
In general, 9:00AM to 5:00PM, 6 days a week (Monday through Saturday). However, since I have to make service calls for grandfather clocks or customers that cannot get to me, I am unexpectedly out of the shop a lot. So it's always best to call ahead to insure I'll be here when you arrive.
What is the best compliment anyone can give you?
"I had given up trying to find someone who could repair my clock at a reasonable cost".
What is your favorite quote or Bible verse?
"Don't fix what ain't broke!"
